BIG BREAKING NEWS – NEPAL REGULATING OTT & IPTV: Nepal Hints at Regulating OTT & IPTV platforms [#MoCIT] 10/11

The government of Nepal has hinted at regulating OTT & IPTV platforms.

Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MoCIT) is governmental body of Nepal that manages postal services, telecommunications, broadcasting, press and information and film development in the country.

MoICT has released a notice which strongly suggests its intention at stamping its authority on the digital content providers.

While the notice is not explicit, its end goal seems to be regulating the digital platforms.

MoCIT has referred to the decades-old Motion Picture (Production, Exhibition, and Distribution) Act, 2026 (1969) to enforce its regulation.

MoCIT pointed to Article 8 of the Act and states that any movie must pass through the Film Censor Board.

This ruling directly affects the movie contents available through OTT & IPTVs.
